Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has been ruled out for Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns with a left ankle sprain, the team announced Tuesday.
The update comes after he was upgraded from doubtful to questionable hours prior.
The small forward was injured in the Celtics’ 113-95 win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

With 3:35 remaining in the third quarter, Tatum’s left ankle landed on Kings center Domantas Sabonis’ foot following a made 3-pointer that put Boston up 10.
Sabonis was issued a flagrant 1 foul for being in the shooter’s landing zone. Despite going down immediately following the injury, Tatum made one of two free throws before exiting.
Even with the early departure, Tatum still led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 5 of 9 from long range. He added seven rebounds and eight assists.
Jayson Tatum’s injury could impact Suns’ play-in positioning
Phoenix undoubtedly dodged a bullet with Tatum sidelined as it fights for play-in positioning with 10 games left to play in the regular season.
Phoenix (35-37) finds itself back in the play-in picture as the 10th seed in the Western Conference thanks in large part to a four-game win streak. Kevin Durant has been especially impressive during this recent stretch, taking home Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday.
Its positioning could change, however, with Sacramento (35-37) ahead of Phoenix by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker (2-1) but is sputtering behind a four-game losing streak.
The Dallas Mavericks (35-38), who are just outside the play-in by 0.5 games, are also still in the picture even with the disastrous Luka Doncic trade.
Getting Anthony Davis back on the court this week certainly helps.
Bradley Beal out vs. Celtics
Phoenix guard Bradley Beal remains out with a left hamstring strain. He’s missed the past four games with the injury.
Phoenix is back in action Wednesday night against Boston. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and can be heard on the Arizona Sports app, 98.7 and ArizonaSports.com.
