Virginia Tech Pro Day Notebook: Tapp And The D-Line, Lane Turning Heads And More

Five years ago, Darryl Tapp was the co-defensive line coach at Virginia Tech. On Wednesday afternoon, he was back in the Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility in Blacksburg working with that same unit — this time as the D-line coach for the Washington Commanders.

Tapp instructed five Hokies defensive linemen through drills at the program’s pro day in front of scouts from all 32 NFL teams this week. That included edge rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland and defensive tackle Aeneas Peebles, who showed out at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in late February and early March.

It was a unique experience for them to work out with Tapp, an All-American and two-time All-ACC honoree as a player at Tech who has been an NFL assistant since 2021 — first in San Francisco and now Washington. It gave them a taste of what they can expect after the 2025 NFL Draft, which is from April 24-26 in Green Bay.

“It’s definitely a great honor,” Powell-Ryland said. “He’s coming back to Virginia Tech to work guys out, that’s big … because he’s got a big role in the league.”
