Konkuk University Medical Center said Thursday that it successfully completed the first procedure of Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA), the latest treatment for atrial fibrillation, on Friday last week.

Dr. Suneet Mittal, a world-renowned expert in arrhythmia treatment, and Professor Kwon Chang-hee of the hospital’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine jointly performed the procedure

Dr. Mittal has been an expert in arrhythmia for more than 25 years and is in overall charge of cardiovascular services at Valley Health System in the United States.

Compared to conventional radiofrequency ablation or cooled balloon ablation, pulsed field ablation has a shorter procedure time, less risk of damage to surrounding tissue, and lower complication rates.

The first procedure at Konkuk University Medical Center took about an hour, and the patient recovered quickly enough to go home the following day.

In this case, Medtronic's PulseSelect PFA System was used. This system uses electrical pulses to precisely ablate specific tissue within the heart.

Unlike radiofrequency or cooling methods, it does not use heat to minimize damage to sensitive areas, such as the esophagus, diaphragm, and tissue around the pulmonary veins, so it is expected to change the paradigm of atrial fibrillation treatment.

However, there is a limitation: the procedure is currently not covered by health insurance and must be performed as an uncovered procedure.

“Pulse field ablation is an innovative technology that can provide safer and faster treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation,” Professor Kwon said. “We will continue quickly introducing the latest medical technology to Korea and creating a patient-centered treatment environment.”
