As the summer edges closer, we’ll see more and more reports linking us with potential moves ahead of what should be a promising transfer window.
Whether we qualify for the Champions League, Europa League or have to settle for a Europa Conference League Spot our Carabao Cup win has earned us, there is several positions we’ll look to strengthen now our PSR situation has improved.
After trying and failing to land Marc Guehi last summer, a new centre-back is almost certain to arrive, especially with Fabian Schar turning 33 and Lloyd Kelly departing for Juventus.
A familiar name has cropped back up and it sounds like a younger alternative to Guehi is back on our radar.
According to The Times, Newcastle could be lining up a summer move for Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah.
In a Wednesday night exclusive from North East reporter Martin Hardy, it’s reported that Newcastle hope a £30m offer plus add-ons may be enough to tempt the Reds into an end-of-season sale.
The piece states that senior figures on Tyneside have shown ‘significant support’ towards a potential move for the 22-year-old, who was named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the win over Latvia on Monday.
Interestingly, the club have long-term interest in the 6ft 4′ defender, enquiring about his availability when Liverpool looked to sign Anthony Gordon while our PSR situation left us vulnerable last June.
The same piece also states that we’re leading the race to sign Burnley’s James Trafford, with a goalkeeper and right-sided forward two of Paul Mitchell’s top priorities alongside a centre-back.
Quansah’s profile is promising. He’s tall, athletic, has a turn of pace and is relatively comfortable on the ball, giving Eddie Howe plenty to work with and another England talent he’d hope to turn into a Three Lions regular.
He’s also showed his versatility this season, filling in at right-back in the Carabao Cup final and at other points this season when Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley have been unavailable.
The Times state that any deal would not put any major dent in our summer transfer budget, offering a cut-price alternative to Guehi and Liverpool the chance to gain a pure profit on one of their Academy grown talents.
On the flip side, is this a level below the calibre of player we should be targeting? He doesn’t appear to be a big part of Arne Slot’s plans and we’d be loathed to boost Liverpool’s finances if those funds were put towards a summer bid for a certain Alexander Isak!
