West Ham United have indentified Sunderland teenage star Chris Rigg as a major summer transfer target, according to reports. The 17-year-old has shot to prominence this season under Regis Le Bris and has been a key part of the Black Cats' promotion charge.

Rigg is likely to the subject of intense transfer speculation this summer, although the youngster is beleved to be happy on Wearside, having already become something of fan favourite. However, the Guardian report that West Ham boss Graham Potter has identified Rigg as a summer target as he looks to overhaul his side.

Potter took over from Julen Lopetegui in January, and while his first priority was to ensure the Hammers moved away from the relegation battle, he is now charged with refreshing the first team for next season. Key to that will be central midfield, with Lille's Angel Gomes high on their wishlist.

However, they have not been able to strike a deal for the midfielder, who will be a free agent in the summer, with several other clubs also keen on the England international. The Hammers could lose Tomas Soucek and are keen to bolster their midfield options to help build a side capable of challenging at the top end of the Premier League.

Tottenham are also reported to be monitoring Rigg's progress and will no doubt have been impressed by his contribution this season. He has played 36 times this campaign - featuring in all but four Championshp games - scoring four goals and contributing one assist as Sunderland challenge for promotion back to the Premier League.

His ability to find space and link-up play between midfield and attack is thought to appeal to West Ham, who already have attacking stars such as Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Crysencio Summerville. However, Sunderland are likely to demand in excess of £25m for Rigg, with his value increasing by the week.

Sunderland are braced for interest in several of their young stars this summer, with Jobe Bellingham also the subject of speculation, with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Crystal Palace and Manchester United keen on the England Under-21 star.
