West Ham have had issues with goalkeepers this season in the Premier League.

The Hammers have chopped and changed between Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski in goal at the London Stadium in recent months.

It is fair to say neither one of this pair has proven themselves under Graham Potter which could see new options be looked into next campaign.

As a result, it will come as music to the English head coach’s ears that a contract has been agreed in East London.

The issues that the Irons have had this season are likely to see the former Chelsea boss experiment with new options during preseason.

That could prove to be the perfect opportunity for teenage shot-stopper Awesu to step up and take up a first-team role in E20.

With that in mind, ExWHUEmployee has reported (27 March) that the 17-year-old is set to sign his first pro contract with the Hammers.

The English youngster signed a scholarship at Rush Green before the 2024/25 season began but has impressed in the months since.

The hierarchy in the London Stadium have high hopes for the keeper who made his England under-17s debut back in September.

This has been realised by offering Awesu a professional deal in East London but that won’t come into effect until Monday (31 March).

Awesu could take up first-team role at West Ham

The likes of Aaron Ramsdale have been linked with a move to the Irons, but rather than spending money elsewhere, utilising the academy could be wise.

This could see Potter take a better look at Awesu moving ahead to the start of the new season despite him being just 17 years old.

The keeper has made multiple appearances in the Under 18s Premier League and the PL2 tournament this campaign and has caught the eye.

Given that the Irons have offered him a new deal as a teenager, the hierarchy at the London Stadium must see something in him.

It will be interesting to see what this means for the future of Areola or Fabianski who have both had their critics recently.
