Chelsea are clearly going to be busy again as soon as the transfer window opens this summer.
Even at this stage of the season, they have been finalising deals. The Blues have signed Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon as stars for the future.
However, the first team squad will also need addressing ahead of the upcoming season too due to a number of issues that have cropped up under Enzo Maresca.
One of the roles that need looking at is centre-back, as a mix of underwhelming performances and injury woes have plagued them this season.
Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have both missed extended periods of time during this season, while the expectation is that Trevoh Chalobah will leave the club at the end of the campaign.

Chelsea should make a move for Tottenham’s Cristian Romero
As Chelsea assess their options, Tottenham star Cristian Romero is reportedly pushing for an exit from the London club, and the Blues should certainly be putting their name in the hat to bring him in.
The Argentine’s tackling success rate is up there with the best in the league, and his ability with the ball at his feet would suit playing the style that Levi Colwill and co have been under Maresca.
Cristian Romero 2024/25 stats Total
Appearances 14
Goals 1
Tackle success % 86.2
Pass success % 89.4
Recoveries 69
Romero’s scattered disciplinary record seems to have been controlled somewhat too. After 25 yellow cards and two sending offs in the three seasons before this one, the centre-back has been booked just once in the current season, albeit one affected by injuries.

Romero would already have key friend as teammate at Chelsea
After playing a key role in Argentina’s World Cup win back in 2022, Romero struck up a relationship with Enzo Fernandez, currently starring in midfield at Stamford Bridge.
Both were on the pitch for their nation’s huge 4-1 win over Brazil recently, a game which was dominated by Fernandez in midfield.
Even after a red card tackle on the Blues man in a derby game between their two clubs, the relationship between Fernandez and Romero remains strong.
Transfers directly between Chelsea and Spurs are rare due to the rivalry between the sides, however this is certainly an avenue the Blues should test the water with to see if they can bring in a ready-made, experienced Premier League centre-back.
