5 former Vikings who still need a team for the 2025 NFL season

It has now been two weeks since the free agency period of the 2025 NFL offseason began for the Minnesota Vikings and the other 31 teams in the league.

As is typically the case, free agency got off to a blazing start around the NFL this year, and for the first time in a while, the Vikings were actually able to land some of the top players on the market. Minnesota had big needs to fill on their offensive and defensive lines, and they weren't afraid to spend a large amount of money to fill these needs.

After allowing an embarrassing nine sacks in the team's first-round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams last season, the Vikings said goodbye to center Garrett Bradbury and guard Ed Ingram earlier this month. Minnesota replaced them with center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries, two former members of an Indianapolis Colts offensive line that was ranked as the 12th-best unit in the NFL in 2024 by PFF.

On the other side of the football, the Vikings should be a lot better at generating a pass rush with their defensive line in 2025 after signing Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave in free agency.

Minnesota's defense finished fourth in the league in sacks last season, and this was still accomplished despite the team not having anyone rank among the top-30 defensive linemen in pressures generated last year. With Allen and Hargrave being added to the mix, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is going to make life even more miserable for opposing quarterbacks next season.

While Minnesota has already made a number of signings since the start of free agency this year, there are several former members of the team's 2024 roster and beyond who are still waiting to find a new home in the NFL for the upcoming season.

Cam Akers - RB

Despite not being a member of the team's Week 1 roster in 2023 or 2024, veteran running back Cam Akers has spent the majority of his last two seasons in the league as a member of the Vikings.

After starting the 2024 campaign with the Houston Texans, Minnesota acquired Akers in a trade a few days before the team's Week 7 game against the Detroit Lions. As a solid No. 2 option in the Vikings' offensive backfield behind Aaron Jones, Akers rushed for 297 yards (4.6 per carry) and one touchdown in addition to catching 10 passes for 52 yards and another two scores in 12 appearances last season.

He's been in the league since 2020, but he's still only 25-years-old. The problem with Akers is his injury history, as he's already torn his Achilles twice during his pro career. Still, he should be able to find a new team in the NFL at some point this offseason.
