AMES — There is a familiar line on Jake Landry’s coaching biography that Iowa State fans will recognize
Last month, ISU announced Landry as its new running backs coach. He replaces Tyler Roehl, who accepted a job with the NFL’s Detroit Lions. Both coached football at North Dakota State, Landry for one season last year and Roehl for 10 seasons.

Why does ISU head coach Matt Campbell keep hiring coaches from NDSU? The Bisons’ winning tradition is a big reason why. NDSU has won 10 of the past 14 FCS National Championships, including beating Montana State in 2024.
“I think no different than building our football program,” Campbell said. “You always try to go to recruit both high school student athletes, college student athletes or a staff that knows how to win and be successful … . I think from a starting point of the qualities it takes to be successful, that’s a great starting point for us in trying to find a staff.”

Thursday will mark one month since Landry joined ISU’s staff. Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser said he could tell Landry had coached a lot of football in meaningful games.
“You can tell that he is really experienced with football,” Mouser said. “You watch what he was doing Day One with those guys, he’s a guy I feel like could coach a lot of positions and is very experienced coaching running backs. The wealth of knowledge that he has in football is going to help us push our offense in the right direction.”
Before Landry worked last year as NDSU’s offensive coordinator and running backs coach, he coached quarterbacks at St. Thomas (FCS) and offensive line/running backs at Temple.
“I think (the decision to hire him was because he) has coached the running back position, has been successful in that everywhere he’s been he’s impacted winning in a really positive way, won a state championship in high school as a quarterback,” Campbell said. “And then I think at the end of the day he’s got a big-picture vision of offensive football, too.”
