Manchester United’s young midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo, may be set to leave Old Trafford this summer, with contract negotiations reportedly at an impasse since March 2024.
Despite ongoing talks, an agreement on a new deal has yet to be reached, raising the possibility that both parties could go their separate ways.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the likelihood of Mainoo’s departure is growing as negotiations continue, though supporters are still hopeful that a compromise can be found.
Mainoo’s time at United has been marked by a lack of consistency, with his role in Ruben Amorim’s tactical setup yet to be fully defined.
Amorim has utilized Kobbie Mainoo in several positions, including the midfield pivot, No.10 role, and even as a forward against Crystal Palace in February, but he has never managed to establish a settled place in the squad.
As the summer transfer window looms, United’s management will have to carefully assess how Mainoo fits into their future plans, with the possibility of selling the 19-year-old for around £70million.
The potential sale of Kobbie Mainoo could also help the club comply with financial sustainability rules, as the sale of academy products is considered “total profit.”
Amorim may see Mainoo as a potential asset in one of the No.10 roles, competing against the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Amad, Joshua Zirkzee, and Mason Mount.

Amorim praised Mainoo’s ability to play nearer the box after the Europa League match against FSCB in January, noting that the young midfielder excels in tight spaces and quick connections.
Erik ten Hag has described Mainoo as the “perfect midfielder,” and his talent has caught the attention of England manager Gareth Southgate, who lauded him as “exceptional” during last summer’s European Championship.
Mainoo’s breakout season in 2023/2024, capped off with a match-winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, has only strengthened his reputation.
However, despite his potential and impressive rise through the ranks at Carrington, a departure could stir controversy.
Those close to the player believe Mainoo has the leadership qualities to one day captain United, but for now, he remains focused on recovering from his injury and returning to action.
