Andre Onana's future is in question amid reports that Manchester United will look to sign a goalkeeper this summer. But he should have plenty of options even if he is forced out of Old Trafford, with a number of top sides showing interest in the past.
Onana himself has admitted that suitors were lining up to sign him in the seven years before he was snapped up by the Red Devils. The 28-year-old was excellent at Ajax, and during his single season at Inter Milan, having spent time in Barcelona's famed academy as a youth prospect. In a recent interview, Onana revealed that Arsenal and Chelsea were two of the clubs to make contact while he was still in the Eredivisie.
When asked about which clubs had approached him, he told Le Media Carre: "I had Monaco, I had Nice, I had Atletico Madrid, I had Chelsea and Arsenal."
Whether either of the two Premier League clubs name-dropped by Onana revisit their interest in the summer remains to be seen. Arsenal's No. 1 jersey has been set in stone since David Raya replaced Aaron Ramsdale in 2023.
But Chelsea's situation is much less concrete. Manager Enzo Maresca has chopped and changed between Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen this season, with fans eager to see the Blues' wealthy owners splash out on a world-class stopper in the next transfer window.
Whether Onana falls into the category is up for debate. The Cameroon international has shown flashes of brilliance since his £47million switch to United nearly two years ago, but he has also built up a catalogue of calamitous mistakes.
Onana could be offered a lucrative way out this summer amid rumoured interest from the Saudi Pro League. However, ESPN claim that he plans to rebuff approaches from the Middle East and stick it out under Ruben Amorim, unless he is told that he is surplus to requirements.
Behind Onana, back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir has also shown an error-prone streak. The Turkish international has not played in the Premier League in either of his two campaigns at the club, and the prospects of him breaking into the starting XI appear slim.
Amorim is set to be backed in the summer after United chiefs elected to tread carefully in January. The Portuguese has struggled to implement the formation and style of play which served him so well at Sporting since inheriting a squad which was built to meet the needs of former manager Erik ten Hag.
