Greece favors a UN-led peacekeeping operation in Ukraine under a potential ceasefire, rather than one overseen by the EU, local media reported Thursday.
While a European-led mission has been discussed, Athens supports UN oversight, which it believes would provide broader international legitimacy, according to Greek daily Kathimerini.
The report adds that an EU mission is unlikely due to opposition from member states like Hungary, as well as Russia.
The Greek government has three conditions for participating in such a mission: a formal ceasefire agreement, a ban on operations within Russian territory and a clear exit strategy in case fighting resumes, it said.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to present these conditions at the “coalition of the willing” summit in Paris on Thursday.
Greece’s potential role in a future mission remains unclear, the daily added.
“Options include land deployment in Ukraine or naval participation in the Black Sea. The latter aligns better with Greek defense priorities. However, it is unclear how feasible that is, especially if Türkiye’s proposal to take command of the force patrolling the sea is accepted," it said.
