Zach Wilson returned to the AFC East this offseason as he agreed to a fully guaranteed one-year, $6 million deal that can reach up to $10 million with the Miami Dolphins. It will mark his third team in as many seasons.
While he spent the entire 2024 season as the Denver Broncos' third-string quarterback and did not see the field, the former second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft believes he is still capable of starting in the NFL. Speaking to the media on Monday, Wilson stated:
There's nothing wrong with being a journeyman, but I still believe I can be a starter in this league whenever that opportunity comes. And so I'm just trying to put myself in the best situation with the best team and coaches and do the absolute best that I can and hopefully at some point, you can get that opportunity to show what you could do.
Wilson spent the first three seasons of his career with the New York Jets, making 34 appearances and 33 starts, leading the team to a 12-21 record. He threw for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions. The second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft completed just 57.0% of his pass attempts while adding 498 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 93 carries.
He was traded to the Broncos last offseason, along with a seventh-round pick, in exchange for a sixth-round pick. While he did not see the field in Denver, he likely saw the Dolphins as a place to turn his career around and potentially earn playing time. Miami's starting quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, has struggled with injuries throughout his NFL career, playing a full season just once in five years.
