Philippine president’s lawmaker sister says Constitution may have been disregarded with Duterte …

**ISTANBUL**

Philippine Senator Imee Marcos, the elder sister of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., said Wednesday that the Constitution may have been disregarded by arresting former President Rodrigo Duterte.

The lawmaker, in her capacity as the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, presided over an inquiry into the arrest of Duterte last week which showed that actions taken by her brother’s administration ran counter to her ideals and principles, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

"Beyond their constant narrative that the Philippines was simply complying with its international commitments, a deliberate effort to obscure the truth only gave rise to ever greater suspicion that the Constitution may have been disregarded and our sovereignty diminished by the arrest of Duterte,” she said.

Duterte's defense team has been provided with details of the first set of evidence to be presented against him. International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan confirmed that 181 items have been disclosed to the defense in a three-page communication, the Philippine Star reported.

While specific details about the evidence were not disclosed, Khan noted that "these items comprise the material cited in the warrant of arrest" issued against Duterte.

President Marcos Jr. had previously stated that Manila did not send any documents to the ICC, despite the court asking for them.

Duterte faces trial at the ICC over his alleged crimes against humanity during his so-called war on drugs. He was taken into custody on March 11 when he returned from Hong Kong. He was immediately transported to The Hague in the Netherlands.
