Up in the air: Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford is in doubt

The 19-year-old’s current contract runs through to 2027, and talks have been ongoing for the midfielder to agree fresh terms and commit his future.

However, it has been a frustrating season for Mainoo, who is currently out with a muscle injury, and he has struggled to nail down a place in Ruben Amorim’s system.

He has played at times as a number ten and even as a false nine in a failed experiment, with his future at the club believed to be in doubt.

The Manchester Evening News report that there is a realistic chance that Mainoo leaves in the summer, as no compromise has yet been reached between player and club over a new deal.

United are said to be open to selling, in what would be a boost to ensuring they operate under profit and sustainability rules, and they have placed a £70m valuation on Mainoo.

Speaking in January, Amorim suggested he wanted to keep Mainoo at the club, but hinted that financial problems could play a role in deciding the midfielder’s future.

"Our idea is always to keep the best players and the players that we build for this club but we know the position the club is in at the moment,” Amorim said. “We will see.

Mainoo has completed 90 minutes in the Premier League only twice since Amorim’s arrival.

While the United boss has appeared keen to use Mainoo in a more advanced role, his only goal and assist this season came in the same Europa League match against FCSB.
