The Premier League transfer window will open early due to Man City's participation in the revamped Club World Cup.
The Premier League transfer window will open early after an agreement between clubs at a shareholders' meeting on Thursday afternoon.
Manchester United and Man City will both be impacted by the rule change that will see the 2025 summer transfer window open early between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June due to an exceptional registration period for the expanded Club World Cup this summer. The transfer window will then open again on Monday 16 June until Deadline Day on Monday 1 September.
It is set to be another busy summer transfer window for both Manchester clubs, as Man City look to continue their squad overhaul under manager Pep Guardiola and Man United properly begin their squad rebuild under head coach Ruben Amorim. The new transfer window start date is particularly beneficial to City ahead of their participation in the revamped Club World Cup, with huge prize money on offer.
When is the Club World Cup?
Man City will be one of two Premier League sides to compete in the revamped Fifa Club World Cup in the United States this summer. The new-look tournament has been expanded to 32 clubs and will take place every four years, rather than the traditional annual event.
City and Chelsea are the two sides representing the Premier League in the tournament, which runs from 15 June to 13 July this summer. It was announced earlier this week that the winners of the competition would receive a staggering £97 million ($125m) in potential prize money.
In total, prize money of £774 million ($1bn) will be shared between the 32 clubs, with a £406m ($525m) participation fee shared based on sporting and commercial criteria, and an additional £368m ($475m) allocated based on sporting performance in the tournament.
City face Moroccan side Wydad AC in their first match of the competition in Philadelphia on 18 June 2025, before they face Al Ain FC in Atlanta on 22 June. The final Group G match will see them face Juventus in Orlando on 26 June. The top two from each group progress to the round of 16, with single-leg ties played all the way until the final on 13 July at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
