'I'm firmly convinced': Steidten says West Ham have a player who will be 'incredibly great'

Tim Stediten left his post as West Ham United’s director of football not long after Graham Potter took over at the London Stadium.

West Ham brought Tim Steidten to England from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2023.

However, he never lived up to his’ pearl-diver’ moniker at the London Stadium.

Tim Steidten made some really poor signings for West Ham, including the likes of Niclas Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme.

He never saw eye to eye with David Moyes, and seriously undermined everything the Scot tried to do.

Steidten arrived in East London with a huge reputation but left very much with his tail between his legs.

Tim Steidten was a dead man walking at West Ham in the end

When Potter was appointed as the new head coach in early January, Tim Steidten’s access to internal systems at West Ham was taken away.

It was clear that his time was done with the Hammers, with Potter bringing his old sidekick Kyle Macaulay into the club.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Looking back now, Steidten was a bizarre appointment from the beginning by the West Ham owners.

David Moyes was never going to be a man who would be happy to work alongside a director of football.

And Steidten never saw eye to eye with Julen Lopetegui either.

In fact, it could be argued that the only legacy the German left in East London was a trail of turmoil.

Tim Steidten says Luis Guilherme will be great for West Ham

The German is clearly a very confident man.

In spite of his struggles with West Ham, he is convinced that Luis Guilherme will end up being a great player for us.

Steidten told the Athletic how he’s convinced Guilherme will come good:

“I’m firmly convinced that Luis Guilherme will be an incredibly great player. Bringing in a young player was perhaps the wrong time, in retrospect. But not the wrong player.“

The Brazilian may well come good at some point, but he’s simply not what we need in the here and now.

He was a baffling signing from Tim Steidten really, especially when considering how much we needed more power and athleticism in the central midfield department.

I believe the Hammers will sell Guilherme if the owners receive an offer anywhere in the region of £20 million.
