Pre-match Analysis: Palace look to progress to their third FA Cup semi-final in nine years against Fulham

Little over a month on from their last visit to Craven Cottage Crystal Palace again travel to the west side of London to face the Lilywhites in the FA Cup.

The last time the two sides met back in February, Oliver Glasner's side ran out 2-0 winners over their London rivals in a comfortable win, which saw Fulham not even register a shot on goal.

Marco Silva's men will no doubt want an improved performance this time around when Palace come to town and will need to produce one if they are to progress to the next round with a visit to Wembley on the horizon.

Palace saw off arch rivals Millwall in the last round at**Selhurst Park,** winning 3-1, but it wasn't all plain sailing. They lost their top goalscorer early on in the match, Jean-Phillipe Mateta, when the striker was kicked in the head by goalkeeper Liam Roberts, which saw the Frenchman leave the pitch on a stretcher and require over 20 stitches to his ear.

Roberts was sent off as a result, and Palace went on to control the game, going two goals up before theLions halved the deficit, until**Eddie Nketiah** made it three late on.

Fulham were taken all the way to penalties in their 5th round tie against Manchester United. Calvin Bassey put his side one up just before halftime, before Bruno Fernandes equalised 20 minutes before the end.

Extra time couldn't separate the two sides so penalties it was, as Berd Leno became the hero as he saved two of United's sport kicks.

Neither Palace nor Fulham have ever won a major trophy, so with who's left in the competition it presents a great opportunity for one of these two to break that and finally give their fans some silverware.

Who starts in goal?

Oliver Glasner faces a decision to make whether to start his number one goalkeeper Dean Henderson on Saturday or the man who has got them to this stage in Matt Turner.

Henderson is undoubtedly a better keeper than the American and gives Palace an arguably better chance to progress through the tournament, but does Glasner has a sense of loyalty towards the Nottingham Forest loanee who has been Palace's keeper in all of the previous rounds.

If the Carabao Cup is anything to go by then you would imagine the Austrian picks Henderson. Palace made the quarter final of that competition where they faced Arsenal and it was Henderson who got the nod in goal, although Turner had played in the previous games.

At this stage of the competition, with a trophy a real possibility at the end of it all, the decision should really be to go with the England international, but only time will tell who Glasner goes with for this game.

The midfield two

Palace have three real options to play as the two holding players in midfield, one who almost seems a definite is Will Hughes. The 29-year-old has been a key player for Palace throughout this season and has almost nailed down one of the two holding roles.

Hughes was suspended for Palace's last league game against Ipswich Town and will be well rested for this game having not been away for international duty, whereas Jefferson Lerma and Adam Wharton had been.

Lerma was called up by Columbia for their World Cup qualification matches and last played on Tuesday night. He would not have got back to England till sometime on the Wednesday and most likely been given a rest day on the Thursday.

With such a tight turnaround it may be a good decision to start Lerma on the bench. Glasner's other option is Wharton who was called up for England Under-21's over the break. He last played on Monday night where he came off the bench for 20 minutes.

Wharton is still making his way back to full fitness following surgery on his groin back in November which saw him miss three months of action. However, Wharton was not required to travel outside of the country for his international games meaning he should be fresher for the game at the weekend.

Both players will offer Palace something different, but it is no doubt the Eagles will be a better side on the ball if Wharton is given the nod.

Mateta or Nketiah?

Mateta was this week cleared to play for Palace in the clash with Fulham following the challenge on him in the Millwall game. The Frenchman required stitches to his ear and will have to play with a protective mask for the foreseeable future to protect his ear.

For this reason alone it gives reason as to why Palace may look to rest Mateta, when you factor in the man who can come in for him is Nketiah is a good replacement.

Palace are a better team with Mateta due to his physical attributes when holding the ball up, bringing others into play and bullying opposition defenders.

However, when given the chances to score Nketiah has what it takes to make the difference. Before the international break the former Arsenal man had two goals in three games with a poachers finish against Aston Villa in the league and his sublime header against Millwall.

Glasner's preferred option will most likely be to use Mateta for as long as he can then to introduce Nketiah, depending on the state of the game. There are options there for Glasner to play with but whatever happens there will no doubt be an urge to hear the Palace fans shout "BOOM!" if Mateta is to put one away and send his team to Wembley.
