The Premier League has confirmed, in an official statement, a different arrangement for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window, establishing two separate registration periods to accommodate the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
In a statement released Thursday, the league announced that clubs will have an early window between June 1-10, followed by a brief closure before the main window reopens on June 16 and runs until September 1.
The Premier League’s decision to implement dual transfer windows comes in direct response to FIFA’s revamped Club World Cup tournament, which will begin on June 15, 2025, in the United States.
This marks the first time the competition will feature an expanded format with 32 clubs from around the world.
“Premier League clubs have today agreed the dates for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window,” read a Premier League statement.
“The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup. It will then reopen on Monday 16 June and close on Monday 1 September.”
This arrangement follows FIFA’s unanimous endorsement of a plan permitting national associations to establish an “exceptional registration window” from June 1 to June 10.
FIFA proposed this temporary window specifically to help clubs shape their squads before the tournament kicks off1.
The unusual split in the transfer window is necessitated by FIFA regulations, which dictate that transfer windows cannot remain open for longer than 12 weeks.
This rule required the brief five-day closure between the exceptional early window and the regular summer transfer period.
Manchester City and Chelsea, as the Premier League’s representatives in the Club World Cup, stand to gain the most from this arrangement.
The tournament offers substantial financial incentives, with winners potentially earning up to £97.1 million in prize money.
It has already been reported that Real Madrid are investigating the possibility of expediting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s anticipated summer transfer to allow him to participate in the Club World Cup in June.
However, since Alexander-Arnold’s contract with Liverpool doesn’t expire until June 30, Real Madrid would need to negotiate a fee with Liverpool to secure his early release.
