Alan Shearer has discussed the idea that Liverpool should target Harry Kane to resolve their striker issue. The Reds have not struggled for goals this season, but the team have lacked a reliable number nine due to Darwin Nunez’s inconsistent form.

England captain Kane, 31, has once again been impressive for Bayern Munich, scoring 32 goals in 37 games this term. Despite looking set to finally win the first trophy of his career in the Bundesliga, Kane has been tentatively linked with a move back to the Premier League, and Shearer believes joining Liverpool would make perfect sense for both parties.

“Liverpool will be looking for a centre-forward in the summer, I don't doubt that, and Harry Kane would be a great option for them because of the size of the club, and he'll score goals,” Shearer explained to Betfair. “Whether Harry decides to stay in Germany or he decides to come back to the Premier League, he'll have options.”

On the possibility of Kane surpassing his personal scoring record, Shearer added: “I've always said that if he comes back to the Premier League then he'll have a really, really good chance of breaking my record. I'm a huge admirer of him, and you can't be anything but because of who and what he is.

“My Premier League record won't last forever. I don't know how long I've been at the top of the charts, but it's been a great privilege to be there when you look at the number of top quality players there.

“The record will go one day, and when it does go, and if it's to Harry, he knows I'd be the first to congratulate him and shake his hand because if anyone deserves it, he does. At the moment, I'm still enjoying it, so long may it continue!”

Harry Kane has scored 76 goals in 82 games since joining Bayern Munich

In 2006, Shearer retired as the Premier League’s all-time goalscorer with 260 goals. Kane seemed certain to surpass that total, scoring 213 league goals for Tottenham Hotspur before his move to Bayern in 2023. Among current Premier League players, Mohamed Salah is closest to the record tally with 184 goals.

Liverpool may target a new striker in the summer transfer window following Nunez’s struggles in front of goal this season. The Uruguayan has scored seven times in 40 games across all competitions. In 2022, Nunez joined the Reds for an initial £64million but has made only eight league starts under new boss Arne Slot and has been the subject of reported interest from the Saudi Pro League and Atletico Madrid.

Kane signed a contract with Bayern until 2027, but an opportunity to win Premier League titles and break Shearer’s record could tempt the England skipper. During his unveiling as a Bayern player, Kane explained that he had not ruled out returning to English football in the future.

“People will talk about the record and Shearer, but I've got plenty of football left in my career,” Kane said in 2023. “For now, it's about trying to achieve things here and trying to push myself and the team to try and reach new levels with this club. That's all my focus is on right now.”

Kane will turn 32 in the summer, which may dissuade potential suitors from signing the experienced forward as a short-term fix. However, Shearer has argued that Kane, who scored in both of England’s games during the international break, will not lose his striker’s instincts.

“Harry Kane is a machine, and he'll always score goals,” Shearer said. “Despite his age, if you provide him with chances or balls into the box, he'll find a way to put the ball in the back of the net, and that's the sign of a great goalscorer.

“Harry has always done it for England. I know there's been one or two debates about last summer, but if he's got players who are prepared to run beyond him, then that opens up space for him, and if you get to the byline like Declan Rice did and whip a ball across like that, he'll score goals. He's a great goalscorer and has been for so many years now.”
