The England star, 26, has spent his entire career at Anfield and has won everything at his boyhood team.
But the right-back has infuriated Liverpool fans by deciding to walk out on the club for nothing in favour of a switch to Madrid.
Former defender Jamie Carragher is among those who have expressed their "disappointment" at the Scouser's decision.
However, pundit Sutton believes the toxic reaction to his imminent departure amongst some supporters has been over the top.

" So the criticism of him I do not get in any way, shape or form. There are always that hardcore, small percentage who feel that way... 'You can never leave, it's our club, bla bla bla'.
"But I don't begrudge him the fact he wants a different challenge. He's done everything, he's won everything so good luck to him."
