The international break follows Sunday’s match, and while some of the squad will be away, Smerud sees it as an opportunity to refine the team’s approach.
"Having been a national team coach for ten years, I understand the balance between club and international football.
"It’s a chance for some players to go and get valuable minutes, while we work closely with those who remain here. It also gives us time to recharge before the crucial run-in," he said.
With a record crowd expected against Arsenal on Sunday, Smerud is hoping for the same positive atmosphere that got the team over the line against Villa.
Smerud said: "It’s important to have a home ground that feels like ours. We had a good experience here against Villa, and we’re looking forward to playing in front of our fans again.
"A good performance on Sunday can help build momentum and bring more supporters on board for the rest of the season."
With just a handful of games left, Smerud knows every point will be vital in the battle for survival, but he insists the team will focus on what they can control.
"Our job is to improve, perform, and embrace this challenge. It’s a privilege to play in these high-pressure games, and we’ll give everything to make sure we stay in this league."
