Liverpool set to keep Jarell Quansah despite Newcastle interest

Liverpool are planning for next season with Jarell Quansah as a key part of their squad, despite Newcastle United making a play for the young defender, according to [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6235296/2025/03/27/jarell-quansah-liverpool-future/).

The 22-year-old was on the Newcastle transfer radar last summer, but Liverpool made it clear they had no intention of selling their academy graduate.

Newcastle are reportedly planning another assault for his signature this summer. However, the Reds remain resolute about Quansah, with head coach Arne Slot planning for next season with the young centre-back.

Also, with captain Virgil Van Dijk leaving this summer, Liverpool might not be too keen on letting other defenders walk away when the transfer window opens.

The highly-rated defender enjoyed a breakout season at Anfield last term, deputising for the oft-injured Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez. He has continued developing this season, making 22 appearances in all competitions.

His performances also earned him a call-up to the England squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, he did not feature against Albania and [Latvia](https://footballtoday.com/2025/03/25/tuchel-names-one-aspect-of-england-win-over-latvia-he-was-unhappy-with/), but he will be delighted to know that he is on Thomas Tuchel’s radar.

Newcastle saw their initial approach for Quansah rebuffed last June. The Magpies immediately switched focus to Gomez but could not get a deal over the line.

Newcastle valued Quansah at around £50 million last summer. Since then, his stock has risen. Plus, he signed a long-term contract, committing to the club until 2029 and making any Newcastle deal difficult.

Quansah is a crucial figure for the future, and Liverpool will not sell him despite Newcastle’s interest.

Newcastle might have to turn to other options as they search for defensive reinforcement. AFC Bournemouth starlet Dean Huijsen reportedly has a £50 million release clause the Magpies can activate, although they will fight with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Real Madrid for his signature.

Lille man Alexsandro Ribeiro is another who should be on the Newcastle wishlist this summer after a terrific season in France. The Magpies may also consider revisiting deals for previous targets like Malick Thiaw, Axel Disasi, and Trevoh Chalobah.
