Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up
Having a dual-monitor setup can be quite beneficial as it offers more desktop real estate than you otherwise wouldn't get with a single monitor. However, ultrawide displays are meant to solve the problem of having to buy two monitors to get that desktop real estate.
A quick look at the ALOGIC 40-inch Edge Ultrawide Monitor
ALOGIC has thrown its hat into the ring with a 34 and 40-inch monitor designed for people who prioritize productivity tasks, and today we will be taking a look at the Edge 40-inch, which features a 100Hz refresh rate, a 21:9 aspect ratio, 3440 x 1440p resolution and an 8ms response time. The Edge is an IPS panel with an 8ms response time (4ms with Overdrive), which further reinstates this monitor is aimed at people wanting to carry out workflows such as video editing, photo editing, spreadsheet work, and other various tasks that demand a big screen and finely tuned colors.
Given the aforementioned specifications, particularly the 8ms response time, I wouldn't recommend this display to any gamer who likes first-person-shooter titles, which really benefit from that quick response time. However, that doesn't mean the Edge can't be used for gaming, and as you will see in my review, I found a few titles the display excelled in. The Edge is priced at $1,299, and we will first jump into the design of the display.

Design
ALOGIC does a fantastic job with the physical design of its monitors, and the Edge is no exception. The monitor's materials consist of aluminum and glass, making for a really premium-looking display. The Edge is a 40-inch flat display housed in an aluminum shell that features holes along its back ridge for airflow. Keeping to the back of the monitor, ALOGIC has made the Edge just 8mm thick, which looks quite aesthetically pleasing when looking at the monitor from the side. It should be noted this 8mm measurement is just for the panel, as the base section that houses the components plus the panel measures much thicker at 40mm.

The right-hand side of the monitor features all of the connectivity options, which I believe are the main attraction of the display, besides its 40-inch panel. ALOGIC has equipped the Edge with a 1x USB-C port with 90W charging, 1x HDMI 2.0 port, 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x USB-C ports (2.0) with 5W charging, 1x 3.5mm audio output and 1x Ethernet port (RJ45 GbE passthrough). These ports work like a charm when it comes to heavy productivity sessions, particularly in cases when I needed to charge multiple devices at once, have my smartphone connected to my PC for file transferring, and laptop charging.
The USB-C port capable of 90W charging was particularly incredible as I was able to connect my MacBook, charge it at its maximum charging capabilities while having it plugged into the Edge for a display. This made my video editing sessions a breeze, and meant all the necessary cables were on top of my desk, making for a clean setup with minimal cables.

The silver sample I received from ALOGIC is extremely aesthetically pleasing, which is no surprise considering the incredible work ALOGIC did with its 27-inch 4K model. The design here is almost identical to the circular air vents on the 27-inch 4K Clarity model, but with the 40-inch Edge, ALOGIC has opted for a black reflective material on the back of the panel. I'm not quite sure if I love this design, as anything that is totally reflective, like this material, attracts quite a lot of fingerprints. However, it does fit the overall aesthetic of the monitor, so I can't knock it for that. Located at the top-center of the back of the display is the ALOGIC branding that glows a nice white color when the display is powered on. This has a clean look and has got some points in my book for its minimalistic take.

Overall, the physical design of the Edge 40-inch is superb. The build quality is premium, it's weighty and doesn't creak or have any obvious points of physical failure. The multi-directional joystick located on the back and at the bottom right of the monitor is easy to use and comes with a satisfying click feeling when engaged, and having access to so many USB-C ports is truly awesome when almost every device these days is USB-C.
Panel Breakdown
The panel of the Edge 40-inch has a resolution of 3440 x 1440p, which means a 21:9 aspect ratio. This is commonly referred to as ultrawide, and it's been paired with a maximum refresh rate of 100Hz and an 8ms response time (GtG), which can be brought down to 4ms when the Overdrive setting is set to its maximum. This response time isn't great if you are planning on gaming on the display, but that isn't the display's intended use case.
Keeping to the specifications, the 3440 x 1440p resolution spread across 40 inches means 93 Pixels-Per-Inch (PPI), which is right on the minimum of what I would recommend for this size display. Any smaller and the sharpness of the image would have been too low for me to recommend at all. As for brightness, since we are rocking with an IPS display, we can expect significant brightness levels with a minimum of 350 nits, with 400 nits being the typical.

Moving on to color, the Edge 40-inch comes with the following color saturation measures: 89% of NTSC, 97% of DCI-P3, 99% of SRGB, and 94% of Adobe RGB. These color measures are adequate for image and video editing, and if a user wants specific changes made to the panel, they can navigate to the On-Screen Display (OSD) options, head down to the Color option, and begin manual tweaking of Red, Green, Blue, Color Temperatures, Gamma, Tint Saturation, and more. Moreover, if you can't be bothered doing the manual tweaking, do not worry, as ALOGIC has equipped the Edge with the presets Neutral, Warm, and Cool. Throughout my testing, I kept the monitor on Neutral for the most organic look, but I didn't mind Warm when I was up late at night doing long working sessions as it made the display much easier on the eyes.

The OSD settings also contain presets for the Picture mode, which can be changed from Standard, ECO, Movie, and User. With the "User" option unlocking full customization of each of the picture options, such as the levels of Backlight, Brightness, and Contrast. Overall, the OSD options are very straight forward, with each of the most-used options being easy to navigate to and control. As someone who often changes some settings, I really appreciate having easily navigable OSD options, as nothing is worse than being burned by a paginated OSD when all you want to do is turn up the brightness a few notches.

Throughout my time testing the display, I didn't really fell the need to change too much in the OSD menu, besides touching up the brightness and as I previously mentioned, change the color temperature to warm after a long day of looking at the monitor. I did notice during testing, the limitation of the viewing angle, and what I mean by that is a drop in brightness on the edges of the display.

For example, if you had Windows icons placed around the edges of a desktop and sat directly in the middle of the display and compared the brightness levels of the icons from the center sitting position to being directly in front of the icons, which means the viewer is sitting directly parallel to them, you would notice the brightness levels of the icons changes quite significantly. From the center position, the icons appear significantly darker; while moving directly in front of them, they appear fully lit. This drop in brightness isn't a fault; it's a limitation of the viewing angle of the display, and while it is disappointing, it's not a dealbreaker for me, and I believe the majority of users would easily overlook it.
Performance
Despite the Edge 40-inch not being designed for gaming, I decided to run it through my normal suite of titles anyway to provide some feedback to users who would be predominantly using this monitor for productivity purposes but also want to indulge in some light gaming. In short, I would warn you that gaming on this monitor is both awesome and terrible. I would emphasize light gaming as much as possible here.

Here are the games I tested: League of Legends, God of War: Ragnarok, Cyberpunk 2077, Valorant, Apex Legends, Age of Mythology: Retold, Black Myth: Wukong, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and DOOM Eternal. Let's start with what was awesome. The 40-inch size of this monitor is nothing to shake your head at here, and does offer some real gaming value in specific titles. For example, the Edge 40-inch made Age of Mythology: Retold look awesome, as I was able to get a massive birds-eye-view of my base. League of Legends was another game that looked great on the Edge, but unfortunately, the downside discovered with League of Legends is applicable for all fast-paced titles I tested (Valorant, Apex Legends, and DOOM Eternal) - response time.

Turning on Overdrive to its maximum, even 4ms response time is incredibly slow in comparison to traditional gaming monitors, where 2ms nowadays is considered to be slow. Due to this limitation, I can confidently rule out playing any fast-paced title on this display, as I just felt like the responsiveness of my clicks was lagging and overall sluggish. With that being said, the Edge 40-inch performed adequately in the slower titles, such as Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarok, and Black Myth: Wukong. There was nothing impressive about the gaming performance in these titles, but thanks to the 100Hz refresh rate, these titles felt reasonably smooth and fluid enough to satisfy someone who perhaps enjoys a few hours of gaming a week.

As for productivity performance, the Edge 40 kicked ass in word processing applications, video editing, and photo editing, all of which I used quite aggressively. Firstly, the ease of plugging in my MacBook to edit some quick video on the large display was fantastic, especially when I could utilize the USB-C ports for charging/display input. Moreover, the transferring of data across the display onto my desktop made the entire process much easier. Back to the video editing.
The 40-inch display size really does wonders for managing clips on a timeline, especially if the video you are editing is getting on the longer side, as you no longer need to keep changing the magnification level of the timeline due to you being able to spread all the clips out across the display's length. Small things like this really made the Edge 40-inch shine.

Web browsing was another strong suit for the Edge 40 as I was able to comfortably have three windows open side-by-side. This may seem like overkill for the typical user, but for someone like myself, who is constantly reading news, reviews, and replying to people over various messaging services, it's fantastic. Excel spreadsheets are another honorable mention here, as you are able to keep all the data in the view, meaning you no longer need to scroll back and forth to keep track of specific cells or columns.
The Edge 40 doesn't ship with a webcam, but ALOGIC encourages buyers to pick up the $164.99 Illuminate USB-C Light Bar, which comes with a built-in 4K autofocus webcam. The lightbar webcam sits atop the display through an intuitive bracket that enables the webcam angle to be adjusted. Additionally, the webcam ships with a remote-control dial that lets users turn the light on/off and change the lighting from warm to neutral.

The goal of the lightbar is to illuminate the workspace below it, which I do appreciate for users who want to draw, read, look at the keyboard, etc. However, I find this to be a massively missed opportunity by ALOGIC, as this product should have been a webcam first before a lightbar, particularly a 4K webcam with built-in lights for video chatting, not a lightbar that happens to have a 4K webcam, which is even indicative by the way it's named "Illuminate USB-C Lightbar with 4K Webcam." Here's what I mean.
ALOGIC 40-inch Edge Ultrawide Monitor Review - A Productivity Beast for $1299 53

The 4K webcam is more than acceptable quality for video chatting, and ALOGIC should have made the lights front-facing, not downward-facing. If they did this, it would have made this an awesome product for people who need a high-quality webcam but don't necessarily have the room or want for an independent light source to illuminate their face. Moreover, most people are video chatting with an overhead light on, which causes shadows across their face. If the webcam had front-facing lights, it would remove those shadows and make the video quality look even better. Perhaps a second generation is necessary here, ALOGIC?
Final Thoughts
So, should you buy the Edge 40-inch? If you shopping for a bigger display to replace your dual monitor setup, or are tossing up between a dual monitor setup or an ultrawide for productivity purposes, the Edge 40-inch is a fantastic option that should be considered.

Keep in mind that this display is a productivity workhorse, with an array of USB-C ports, wide desktop real-estate, and color options aimed at video/photo editors. But for those who want to game on it, you can, but I would still recommend a user have no more of a time split of at least 90% productivity and 10% gaming. If you spend any more time gaming, you are better off spending your money elsewhere.
As for productivity, the Edge 40 ate up any task I threw at it, and I can confidently recommend it to anyone who spends considerable time in spreadsheets, video/photo editing software, or web browsing. The 100Hz refresh rate makes for a smooth experience, the IPS panel makes text easy on the eyes, and the color options mean creators can tweak the display to their liking. Great work here, ALOGIC.
