Djordje Petrovic’s recent comments show he is Chelsea’s perfect goalkeeper for next season - opinion

The goalkeeper situation at Chelsea remains unclear ahead of what is set to be a busy summer transfer window.

Despite having Enzo Maresca’s backing when under fire this season, both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have failed to impress throughout the campaign.

The pair have shared the gloves in the Premier League recently, with it currently the Spaniard being trusted with the number one spot.

Maresca wants a new goalkeeper though with him showing a particular preference towards signing one who has the ability to play with the ball at his feet.

Djordje Petrovic’s improvements show he is the best option for Chelsea

This was reportedly a large reason behind why their number one from last season, Djordje Petrovic, is currently on loan away from the club.

It was claimed there were feelings at Chelsea that Petrovic wouldn’t suit Maresca’s style, and so he instead was sent out to Strasbourg.

It remains unclear at this point whether the Serbian will be in Chelsea’s plans going forwards, however his recent comments suggest that he could have put himself in position to be in contention at Stamford Bridge again.

He said: “Every goalkeeper wants to make saves. I work every day to improve so I can be there when my teammates need me on the pitch. I’ve become a more complete goalkeeper than before I came to Strasbourg.

Djordje Petrovic’s brilliant spell at Strasbourg

Similar to the impact Andrey Santos has had with the Ligue 1 side, Petrovic has established himself as one of the top players in his position thanks to regular minutes at Strasbourg.

Petrovic recorded five clean sheets in a row recently, something that has not been done by that side in more than 40 years.

Chelsea can save a lot of money in the transfer market by sticking with the goalkeeper already on their books, however some have doubts that this is the move they will make.

Jody Morris doesn’t think Petrovic will get his chance, even though he acknowledges that he is the best option they currently have going into next season.
