The Premier League has confirmed that there will be a new summer transfer window devised following the expansion of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Only Manchester City and Chelsea will be representing the Premier League in the new tournament this summer thanks to their recent Champions League wins. However, their participation has thrown the division's transfer dealings up in the air as FIFA have announced an 'exceptional registration period' to allow players to compete in the tournament despite their contracts expiring at the beginning of June.

The new transfer window will not only allow City and Chelsea to sign players for the tournament but also allow other non-competing clubs in the Premier League - like Manchester United - to do deals too. The Manchester Evening News has taken a closer look at what this all means below.

When is the summer transfer window?

The summer transfer window will open on June 1 and close temporarily on June 10. It will then reopen for the remainder of the summer on June 16 before closing on September 1.

This is likely to be a temporary measure this year for the Club World Cup and will not be repeated next year when it is not being competed. However, it is likely to return again at the next Club World Cup in 2029.

What will it mean for United?

United are most likely going to be busy in the first transfer period with Jadon Sancho. The Reds' wantaway winger is currently on loan at Chelsea for the season and it will be interesting to see whether or not the Blues extend his registration so he can play in the Club World Cup.

After a poor season at Stamford Bridge, there are concerns that Chelsea will choose not to pay their £25m clause for Sancho in the summer. If they were to do that, they would have to pay United £5m.

If they chose not to register Sancho for the Club World Cup and subsequently confirm they are not going to sign him permanently, United could use the early transfer window to find him an alternative club. The Reds would need to remember that no business can be officially completed between June 11 and June 15.

Away from Sancho, United may try and take the opportunity of an early transfer window to complete some incomings. Viktor Gyokeres is likely to be at the top of the Reds' wishlist this summer and Ruben Amorim may see the early window as an opportunity to bring the Swede in nice and early before the pre-season tour.
