Marco Silva endured a difficult time in the dugout at Everton.

The former Watford manager enjoyed a great first season at Goodison Park, finishing eighth in the Premier League in the 2018/19 campaign.

However, the 47-year-old was sacked in December 2019 after just 18 months in charge, with the club sitting in the relegation zone after a 5-2 defeat to local rivals Liverpool.

The Portuguese has gone on to enjoy success with Fulham and has the London club in with a chance of securing a Champions League berth.

Silva opens up on Everton challenges

Despite Silva’s tough time at Everton, he has bounced back and is impressing in his latest spell in the English game.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

The former Hull man revealed that he still believes that the Blues are the biggest club that he has managed and opened up on the difference between expectations and reality at Goodison Park in his spell.

In an interview with A Bola (27 March), he said: “It’s a fascinating club, it’s a huge challenge to be in charge of Everton.

“I realise that in Portugal people don’t really understand the importance I’m giving to the club, but those who are in England, who work in England, and who have a deep knowledge of English football, understand what I’m saying.

“Before this Manchester City avalanche, Everton used to be the fifth or sixth with the most league titles and titles in England, but in recent years this situation has been reversed. However, Everton has a tremendous history, but at the moment, due to recent events, it is aiming for different goals.

“When I was there, and then under Ancelotti, the club always wanted to finish in the top eight. But there was a divergence between the fans’ spirit and what was actually possible to achieve, creating the idea that defeat was felt as fateful.”

Everton and Silva were a case of right place, wrong time

Given those quotes, it seems like Silva has a clear admiration for the club and its supporters ,and he has emerged as a top-quality manager in his time at the Cottagers.

Perhaps it was just a case of right place, wrong time for the Portuguese and the Blues, with the influence of sporting director Marcel Brands and owner Farhad Moshiri hampering his time there.

If Silva was inserted into the Everton dugout now, it would be a different story with the Friedkin Group in place behind the scenes, ready to invest in transfers and a better playing squad at his disposal, which has seen David Moyes go on a nine-game unbeaten run.

When the Blues hierarchy decides to move from the Scotsman, which does not look like anytime soon, given that incredible run, perhaps Silva will be under consideration to right the wrongs of his first spell at Goodison Park.

It would not be a bad bet considering what he has done in West London, but they would face heavy competition with Tottenham also interested in his services if Ange Postecoglou departs.
