UEFA has launched a formal investigation into four Real Madrid players following their post-match conduct in the Champions League round of 16 clash against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The governing body is assessing whether Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos, and Vinicius Jr. breached UEFA’s Disciplinary Regulations during their celebrations after Madrid beat their city rivals on penalties.
According to UEFA, the investigation will focus on individual actions that may have violated the governing body’s code of conduct.
Rudiger is under scrutiny for placing his hand around his neck (Undertaker style), while Mbappe is being investigated for a gesture with his genitals.
Meanwhile, Vinicius faces questions over a confrontation with the home crowd. Atletico fans have been openly racist towards the Brazilian international. They hung a doll wearing a Vinicius shirt from a bridge near Real Madrid two years ago.
Ceballos did not feature in the match due to injury but is being probed for his behaviour towards Atletico fans.
The disciplinary process involves an investigating judge gathering evidence before determining whether formal charges should be brought against the players.
Real Madrid will present their defence to prevent potential sanctions, like suspensions or match bans.
Tensions between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have often flared in high-stakes encounters, and this latest development adds another layer of controversy to their fierce rivalry.
The outcome of the UEFA probe could have significant ramifications for Madrid and their European campaign, with any punishments potentially impacting key players in upcoming Champions League fixtures.
Arsenal will keep an eye on the development as they prepare to face the 15-time Champions League winners in the quarter-final.

The Gunners will back themselves to come out on top against a Los Blancos side that is not firing on all cylinders, but key Madrid players receiving suspensions will also be a welcome boost.
The North Londoners have a decent record against the reigning La Liga champions. They have met twice (2005/2006 round of 16), with Arsenal claiming a famous win at the Santiago Bernabeu before a draw at the Emirates as the Gunners steamrolled to the final.
Arsenal hope to get a small helping hand from UEFA before meeting Madrid on April 8 and 16.
