Manchester United legend Gary Neville hailed Newcastle United supporters for the atmosphere they generated inside Wembley.
It has been almost two weeks since Eddie Howe led the Magpies to their first domestic trophy in 70 years. Liverpool were put to the sword in brutal fashion, with a 2-1 defeat flattering Arne Slot’s men.
Jubilant scenes emanated around the national stadium and beyond, with grown men reduced to tears after witnessing Toon history. Before the Saudi-backed takeover, few expected the day to arrive, with Newcastle failing to reach a semi-final let alone a final during Mike Ashley’s 14-year ownership.
Neville contributed to the Magpies’ woes during his playing career as Man United famously clinched the Premier League in 1995-96. The Red Devils also brushed Newcastle aside in the 1999 FA Cup final.

However, the former England right-back, who worked on commentary duties for Sky Sports during the game, was happy to see “unbelievable” Newcastle finally lift silverware. He told The Overlap: “It was a great day for Newcastle. It was unbelievable, the atmosphere was brilliant.
“To be fair, if you weren’t a Liverpool fan, it was a pretty special day. I think everyone in the country felt good about that. Newcastle hadn’t won a trophy for 70 years. It was unbelievable.
“The fans behind me to the left, honestly, if you could see their faces… The screaming, the veins in their necks… They’d never felt like that in their lives. It was unbelievable.”
Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher reflected on the Wembley defeat as a positive for English football. Manchester City remain the only “big six” team left in the FA Cup, which resumes this weekend.
“People have said about this season that the league isn’t that good,” Carragher added. “But at the start of the season, if you’d said ‘What do we want?’ We wanted a different (Premier League) winner, didn’t we?
“If you’d have said Newcastle were going to win something after 70 years, and the FA Cup is still in a situation where there’s three or four clubs who have never won it before… (Aston) Villa haven’t won a trophy for 30 years (and are still in it). I say it all the time: teams go too long without winning things. It’s not good for the game.”
Jamie Carragher believes Eddie Howe is perfect for England
Carragher tipped Howe for England immediately following the Carabao Cup win. He said: "He's done a brilliant job. I think he is the real deal. It's not ideal that the England squad does not have an English manager. When the job became available, I said Eddie Howe was the best option.
“If the FA appointed him, he probably wouldn't be doing this today! Under Howe, Newcastle have been a physical team but they saved the best until now.”
