UFC sensation Paddy Pimblett has joked how he would go about “chopping down” Newcastle United hero Dan Burn.

A lifelong Liverpool fan, the Scouser was in attendance at Wembley as the Magpies ended their 70-year reign without domestic silverware. Blyth-born defender Burn broke the deadlock with a bullet header before Alexander Isak sealed the deal shortly after half-time.

Burn, being a local player, is now etched into St James’ Park folklore and will likely never need to buy a pint on Tyneside again. Eddie Howe is also set to be given freedom of the city - symbolises how much the historic achievement means.

Not since 1955 have Newcastle fans celebrated a domestic honour and, to their credit, Liverpool fans took the defeat well. Club legends like Jamie Carragher publicly declared their happiness for the Magpies finally getting over the line.

MMA contender Pimblett, however, has quipped that he would love to “punch his head in” when discussing Burn. A young Newcastle fan asked the 30-year-old for his thoughts on Liverpool losing the Carabao Cup final.

“I’d punch his (Burn) head in,” Pimblett responded at a UFC media scrum. “I’d chop his calves down with kicks and he wouldn’t be able to walk for nine months.”

In fairness, Pimblett hailed Newcastle supporters for “deservedly” winning the trophy. He believes the Magpies showed more fight on the day to deliver success for their fans.

“Newcastle deserved to win last week,” Pimblett added. “I was there at Wembley and they wanted it more. Our team didn’t turn and you deservedly lifted a trophy. It’s nice to get beat by a team who has good fans and deserved to win a trophy after so long.”

Dan Burn yet to celebrate making Newcastle United history

Astonishingly, Burn is yet to soak up the celebrations despite being the Wembley hero. He was needed for England duty the following day but promised to make amends at this Saturday’s trophy parade.

"It was strange,” Burn told reporters at a Three Lions media scrum. “As soon as I left the stadium my focus completely switched to this (international duty). I had my family here and the kids and we ended up getting on the bus about 12 o'clock back to the hotel.

"It was getting a bit rowdy and I was just ready to go to sleep! There will be time to celebrate. I know the club has put stuff out about there being a parade (a week) on Saturday, so I think that's when I'll celebrate. But I've waited a long time for this opportunity and didn't want to spoil it."
