SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Creighton guard Steven Ashworth has been selected to the E*TRADE Men's 3-Point Championship roster for the 36th annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships on Thursday, April 3. Ashworth is one of eight players that will participate in the men's 3-point competition, which will air live on ESPN at 6 p.m. Central from Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Ashworth is a 6-foot point guard from Alpine, Utah, who has started all 35 of his appearances this season. He averaged 16.4 points and leads the BIG EAST with 6.8 assists per game and 93.0 percent marksmanship at the free throw line. Ashworth ranks fourth nationally and set a CU single-season record in free throw percentage, while he's sixth in the country in assists and ninth in three-pointers made, both of which are second-most in CU history. He's become the first player in CU history with at least 500 points and 200 assists in the same season, and finished his career with 1,994 career points, 740 career assists and 394 career three-pointers made. He was named a Second Team All-BIG EAST choice and is a finalist for the Nolan Richardson Award.
Ashworth will be the sixth Creighton player in the last 25 years to take part in the men's three-point contest. but first since 2022. Kyle Korver finished second in the 2003 competition to Butler guard Darnell Archey, while Booker Woodfox did not advance to the semifinals in the 2009 competition won by Miami's Jack McClinton. Ethan Wragge placed fifth in the 2014 competition won by Baylor's Brady Heslip. In 2018, Marcus Foster didn't advance out of the quarterfinal round, won by Connor Burchfield from William and Mary. Most recently, Alex O'Connell finished third in the 2022 contest won by Iowa's Jordan Bohannon.
O'Connell also participated in the Slam Dunk Contest in 2022, becoming just the fourth player ever to be in both events in the same season, and first since 1997. The only other Slam Dunk contest participant in Bluejay history was Rodney Buford in 1999.
It's also worth noting that Creighton Athletics Hall of Famer Kathy Halligan won the women's three-point contest in 1992, as she made 21-of-25 three-pointers, including her last shot at all five stations (worth two points), to score 26 points in the final.
