Former Man United forward Mason Greenwood takes drastic action amid transfer interest

Mason Greenwood chose to return early from a holiday during the international break to train at Marseille's training ground ahead of the end of season run in.

The former Manchester United academy graduate is keen to return to the starting lineup after being dropped to the bench in Marseille's last two Ligue 1 games.

It has been reported in France that Marseille coach Roberto de Zerbi had become irritated by Greenwood's 'erratic' effort levels. Greenwood has since held talks to clear the air with the first-team staff at Marseille.

L'Equipe has now detailed Greenwood's early return to the training ground. A L'Equipe report said: "A surprise guest showed up at the gates of La Commanderie last Wednesday, in the middle of the international break.

"Roberto De Zerbi had given his players four days of rest after the defeat at the Parc des Princes in the clash against PSG, but Mason Greenwood chose to cut his vacation short to come and train, on his own initiative, in the company of a fitness coach."

The newspaper add that De Zerbi has been in 'daily contact' with Greenwood's father over the levels expected from him. "The former Manchester United striker probably had more to prove after an embarrassing stretch where he lost a lot," it read.

The 23-year-old's commitment could see him return to De Zerbi's starting XI this weekend when they face Reims. Greenwood has netted 16 goals in 28 appearances so far this season.

However, should he depart Marseille this summer amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the Reds will be entitled to a sell-on clause.

Reports suggest that could be as high as 60%, and if that is the case, assuming Marseille at least make their money back on Greenwood, that would represent a significant windfall for United.

He joined the French side from United for a fee of £26million last summer.
