The San Antonio Spurs won’t have an easy road to getting back on the winning track tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Spurs snapped a three-game winning streak in their last outing by losing to the Detroit Pistons. San Antonio now has a record of 31-40.
The Cavs have been one of the best teams in the NBA all season long. At 58-14, Cleveland is atop the Eastern Conference. The Boston Celtics, the NBA’s defending champions, are 4.5 games behind the Cavs. Only the Oklahoma City Thunder (60-12) have a better record.
The Spurs, meanwhile, are the 13th seed in the Western Conference. Despite being nine games below .500, San Antonio is actually only three games out of qualifying for the play-in tournament. Of course, without Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox for the rest of the season, it’s unlikely that the Spurs will be able to make up the needed ground.
This is the first time this season that the Spurs and the Cavs will play against each other. On April 4th, the two teams will face off again in San Antonio at the Frost Bank Center.
Victor Wembanyama Surgery?
Although the Spurs haven’t announced anything, there are reports that Victor Wembanyama recently had surgery to address the blood clot in his shoulder. Back in 2019, Brandon Ingram — then of the Los Angeles Lakers — had surgery to address deep venous thrombosis and promote better blood flow in his shoulder and arm.
Even if Wembanyama indeed underwent surgery, there’s still a chance that he’ll be ready for the start of the 2025-26 NBA campaign. Prior to being diagnosed with DVT, the superstar 21-year-old was averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 33.2 minutes per game, while shooting 47.6% from the field, 35.2% from three-point land and 83.6% from the free throw line.
San Antonio Spurs Injury Update
Charles Bassey remains out with a knee injury. However, the big news is who isn’t on the injury report for the Spurs. Going into the game against the Pistons, Stephon Castle was listed as questionable with a hyperextended knee. Thankfully, the rookie was able to play in Detroit.
Castle started off slow against the Pistons. In the first half, he missed all seven of his field goal attempts. However, the leading candidate for the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year award bounced back with a great second half. Following halftime, he was 7-for-8 from the field and played with great intensity.
Betting Guide: Spurs at Cavaliers
The Cavs are favored by 15 points and the over/under is 236.5 points. The Spurs struggled against the Pistons so don’t expect this to be a close game either. The smart money is on the Cavs winning by 16 or more points.
