Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon celebrate after the Carabao Cup Final between Liverpool and Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes went out of his way to ensure that two of Newcastle United's key squad members got Wembley recognition during the Carabao Cup win over Liverpool.

The Brazil midfielder became the first Newcastle skipper to guide the team to a trophy since 1969 after skippering the club to a win over Liverpool. The ex-Lyon star was one of the stars of the show as the Reds were floored in a 2-1 win.

But Bruno resisted the temptation to hog the limelight when heading up the famous Wembley steps to lift the trophy. Bruno as team captain had the right to lift the cup on his own but not only did the South American insist on Kieran Trippier joining him on the trophy hoist, injured club captain Jamaal Lascelles was also ordered to the front of the Royal Box.

The gesture meant that the club was represented by captains from both the pre and post takeover eras. Lascelles is edging his way back to fitness after a knee injury and could play again in May.

It remains to be seen who gets the nod to be captain when Lascelles and Bruno are both fit. But judging by the way the armband has been passed around between Trippier and Blyth lad Dan Burn when Bruno has gone off it is likely to remain on the Brazilian's arm.

Bruno did not only include his two team-mates from the dressing room leadership group but also went out of his way to involve Anthony Gordon in the on pitch celebrations. Gordon had missed the final through suspension after a red card in the FA Cup against Brighton & Hove Albion.

But he had been a key player throughout he Carabao Cup run, scoring twice across the two legs of the semi-finals against Arsenal. Bruno made sure Gordon was a big part of the celebrations at Wembley by hauling him in front of the fans and starting a chant about the Scouser.
