Vitor Pereira should be deeply concerned as Wolves risk creative collapse - opinion

Despite being just one place above the relegation zone, Wolves are expected to retain their top-flight status. Vitor Pereira must make some big decisions in the summer though.

Wolves were the second-highest spenders in January and are heading for another important transfer window.

The Premier League announced changes to the summer window — the trading period will open sooner than in previous years — forcing clubs to assess their recruitment plans earlier than expected.

Worry for Wolves as most creative players could all leave in summer

One of Wolves’ biggest problems this season has been how many times they’ve been able to put the ball in the back of the net.

The Old Gold’s 40 goals this term put them among the Premier League’s lowest-scoring teams, and unless Pereira adds more firepower and offensive creativity, the problem will continue.

Worryingly, Wolves’ best three players when it comes to most accurate passes played in the final third are all linked with leaving Molineux in the summer — Joao Gomes, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha.

Joao Gomes is a transfer target for Spurs with Ait-Nouri admired by Liverpool. Cunha is wanted by all the top clubs and remains the likeliest player to leave.

Although Pereira won’t want to lose any of the trio, losing them all in the same window could prove disastrous and force the remaining attackers to feed off scraps.

Almost irreplaceable

Even though Joao Gomes, Ait-Nouri and Cunha are arguably Wolves’ three most valuable players, with their potential sales bringing in significant funds, ironically, the club cannot afford to sell them.

Matheus Cunha value: £62.5 million

Joao Gomes value: £40 million

Rayan Ait-Nouri value: £35 million

Jorgen Strand Larsen has struggled for service all season, and although he has hit a purple patch in recent weeks, the Norwegian cannot be expected to carry the side alone next season.

Failure to address the possibility of losing such creativity would see the side struggle in the most important area of the pitch.

Pereira has nine games left to save Wolves’ season but then his priority will be to mitigate the impact of losing at least one of his team’s most precise players.
