Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo is set to make his Scottish Premiership debut this Saturday afternoon against Hearts at Celtic Park. With Kasper Schmeichel sidelined due to injury, the Finnish shot-stopper will be given his chance to impress in Brendan Rodgers’ side. However, an unexpected connection has emerged between Sinisalo and Hearts boss Neil Critchley, who worked with the young keeper during their time together at Aston Villa.

Critchley’s Admiration for Sinisalo
Ahead of the clash, Critchley spoke about his past experiences with Sinisalo, having worked with him at Aston Villa and monitored his progress during an impressive loan spell at Exeter City. “I know Sinisalo from my time at Aston Villa,” Critchley told the Edinburgh News. “He also had an outstanding season for Exeter in League One when I was at Blackpool, so I know his capabilities. He’s a top goalkeeper and an able deputy, that’s for sure.”
While acknowledging that Sinisalo lacks the experience of Schmeichel, Critchley was quick to praise the 23-year-old’s ability, highlighting his strong performances in English football. “At this moment in time, he doesn’t have the experience of Kasper Schmeichel, but he is still a very good keeper,” he added.
Hearts Looking to Test Celtic’s Stand-In Keeper
Despite the praise, Critchley made it clear that Hearts will be looking to test Sinisalo at every opportunity. “Whoever is in goal, we want to cause them problems – whether that’s from set-pieces or shots at goal from open play, that’s the aim,” he said. “That’s going to be difficult at Celtic Park, but that’s the challenge. It’s one we are really looking forward to.”
Sinisalo will be eager to prove himself on Saturday, and a solid performance against Hearts could go a long way in strengthening his case for more game time in the absence of Schmeichel. With both teams having plenty at stake, all eyes will be on Celtic’s young keeper as he faces a familiar face in the opposition dugout.
