Liverpool have reportedly accelerated their interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong by holding talks with him.

The Dutch defender is one of the players linked with a move to Liverpool as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who appears Real Madrid-bound.

The Liverpool vice-captain is said to be close to signing a five-year deal at Real Madrid, having turned down the Reds’ approach for a contract extension.

Liverpool have identified Frimpong as a potential replacement, with the Bayer Leverkusen defender said to be eager for a summer move.

Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg recently revealed that the 24-year-old is keen on leaving Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

“Jeremie Frimpong is ready for the next step and is planning a move in the summer,” the Sky reporter wrote on X.

“Spain and England are two concrete options for him. There are already concrete enquiries. The 24-y/o right wing-back can leave Leverkusen for around €40 million in summer.”

German outlet BILD recently claimed that Arne Slot and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong have been in contact for the whole of the 2024/25 campaign.

According to the latest report, Slot and Liverpool have now taken concrete steps to make the move a possibility.

Per the Irish Examiner, “Liverpool have held initial talks over the signing of Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong.”

The report adds that, while Liverpool’s interest in the 24-year-old is genuine, talks between the club and player “are at an early stage.”

“Sources said the obvious ‘domino factor’ that could accelerate Liverpool’s interest would be Trent Alexander-Arnold moving to Real Madrid, amid reports a deal has now been agreed for the England international to join the European champions,” the report added.

It is easy to see why Liverpool and a host of other European clubs want Frimpong.

The 24-year-old has been in exceptional form since joining Leverkusen, contributing to 33 goals since last season with 15 goals and 18 assists across all competitions.

He was also part of the Netherlands squad, which reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024, and also starred recently for the Oranje as they crashed out of the Nations League quarter finals.
