Chelsea’s 2023 summer signing, Djordje Petrovic, is in favour of staying at sister club RC Strasbourg beyond his loan spell.
Djordje Petrovic is enjoying his time in France. The Serbian shot-stopper has been doing wonders for RC Strasbourg Alsace while on loan from the sister club Chelsea. While he is expected to return to his parent club in the summer, the young goalkeeper has talked about his desire to continue at the French club.
During a recent press conference, the 25-year-old was asked about his future, to which he responded via GetFootballNews: “I am focused on finishing the season in the best way. We’ll see after what could happen this summer. It could be a very good option to stay here if Strasbourg qualify for the UEFA Champions League,”
Petrovic made a name for himself in Major League Soccer while playing for the New England Revolution. His performances earned him a move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023. While the Blues had a lot of expectations from the Serbian shot-stopper, the move didn’t go according to plan for them.
While he did feature in a total of 31 games, the 25-year-old couldn’t establish himself as a key figure in the team. Eventually, he lost his place in the team, and they ended up sending him out on loan to fellow BlueCo-owned club RC Strasbourg ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Petrovic is enjoying his time in Ligue 1. He has featured in a total of 23 matches for the French outfit and has conceded a total of 27 goals. He has kept a total of eight clean sheets so far. His performances have played a big part in their dominant run in the French top flight as they are pushing for a Champions League spot.
Petrovic seeks a move away from Chelsea
The Serbian shot-stopper is on a straightforward loan deal, which runs out at the end of the season. While he is set to return to his parent club, Petrovic doesn’t really have a future at Chelsea.
He will certainly fight with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen for a place in their starting XI, but even he might not be the answer to Chelsea’s problems at the back. They will eventually go after another world-class goalkeeper, as a result, a move elsewhere might actually help the 25-year-old.
The Serbian international is in favour of staying at the French club. If they manage to secure Champions League football, he will certainly try to ensure he can continue at Strasbourg. Whether it will be a permanent move or another loan spell could depend on Chelsea as well as the player.
