Former Pittsburgh Steelers draft bust nearly ended up with another team

When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Artie Burns in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, it was a shocking pick, but the team needed a cornerback. To Burns’ credit, a decade later, and he is still in the league.

On March 17, Burns, who played his college football at the University of Miami, signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins.

In his opening press conference in Miami, Burns said when he came out during the 20116 NFL Draft, he thought the Dolphins would ultimately select him. Going back to Miami is a full circle moment in Burns’ career.

"When I was coming out, Miami [Dolphins] had a Miami Pro Day for all the local guys to come out and workout for the team," Burns said. “They insinuated that if I had a good workout, they was gonna pull the trigger on me in the first round. On draft night, I’m thinking I had a good workout. I’m thinking they’re gonna pull the trigger on me. And I ended up going to Pittsburgh.”

Burns started off with the Steelers as a bust who was out in just four seasons, but has carved out a career for himself. Over his career, he has played for the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks in addition to the Steelers and Dolphins.

He has just four interceptions throughout his career, while racking up 195 total tackles. He spent the last three seasons with the Seahawks, primarily as a special teamer and scout team cornerback.
