André Corrêa do Lago, president of COP30, stated on Wednesday (26) in Berlin that oil exploration in the Amazon Mouth will be a "national decision," not a consensus. "We had consensus in the Paris Agreement," the diplomat declared during the Petersberg Climate Dialogue.
Asked whether the debate over oil exploration—so strongly advocated by Donald Trump—could be an embarrassment for Brazil at this moment, Corrêa do Lago responded that the discussion was public and open, "an opportunity to show how much the country wants to be transparent."

The potential exploitation of the Amazon Mouth would add further complications to the Brazilian COP, the first after a year in which global temperatures exceeded the 1.5°C limit, as Corrêa do Lago notes, and amid an unspoken pessimism caused by the absence of the U.S. in negotiations.
Lula’s government is facing an internal dispute over the issue, with exchanges of barbs between ministers Alexandre Silveira (Mines and Energy) and Marina Silva (Environment). The minister announced a "technical" meeting between ministries on the subject, to be held after the president’s trip to Japan.
