SNUBH, certified as 'research-centered hospital,' aims to lead healthcare R&D innovation

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) announced on Friday that it has been certified as a “research-centered hospital” for the first term of 2025 following an evaluation by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The certification will be valid for three years, from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2028.

The hospital, located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, attributed the certification to its comprehensive research infrastructure, outstanding healthcare research capabilities across various technological fields, and its potential to establish a healthcare R&D innovation platform.

In 2016, SNUBH established the Healthcare Innovation Park (HIP), the nation’s largest research space owned by a hospital. Since then, it has continued to strengthen its research infrastructure, including the launch of the Ji Seok Young Biomedical Research Center for preclinical research in 2019.

By fostering innovative research in key areas of next-generation medical science, SNUBH has significantly impacted the research sector, publishing more than 2,000 SCI papers annually, the hospital noted.

SNUBH has outlined three key strategies with this certification: strengthening research governance and expanding its mission, enhancing open and convergent research infrastructure and networks, and securing future-oriented research capabilities while driving strategic industrialization outcomes.

In particular, by establishing research governance, SNUBH aims to create an open and convergent research platform and function as a healthcare R&D center. Additionally, to fulfill its social responsibilities as a high-level general hospital, it plans to transform various clinical data into valuable medical technologies and play a key role in addressing national challenges such as emerging infectious diseases, incurable diseases, aging, and climate change.

“The role of hospitals is more important than ever in solving national healthcare issues and ensuring the sustainable growth of the healthcare industry in the future,” said Song Jung-han, CEO & President of SNUBH. “SNUBH will build a research and development platform that spans from basic to clinical research, leveraging accumulated clinical information and research resources, and will further integrate the hospital's academic capabilities to accelerate the spread of a research culture.”
