All the latest transfer news surrounding Tottenham as they begin to look ahead to Chelsea.
Tottenham are now within a week of returning to action, but many fans will be looking forward to the Europa League action given the competition is the club’s only remaining avenue to European football. Though, Ange Postecoglou has warned his men against taking the Premier League for granted, and he will want to see significant improvement between now and the end of the season.
The board will, too, with Postecoglou’s future at Spurs far from secure after a disastrous season so far. As Tottenham begin preparations for next week’s clash with Chelsea next Thursday, we have rounded up all the latest transfer news surrounding the club.
Szymanski links
Tottenham are said to be interested in a move for Fenerbahce midfielder Sebastian Szymanski. According to Aksam, the North London club are rivalling AC Milan and Napoli for the attacking midfielder.
The Turkish club are reportedly ready to sell the Poland international for a fee of around £20.8million. The 25-year-old is under contract until 2027 as things stand, but he could be on the chopping block this summer despite making 42 appearances across all competitions, including 12 in the Europa League. Szymanski has scored five and assisted four so far this term.
Szymanski could be an alternative to James Maddison for Spurs, who have learned the importance of proper depth this season, meanwhile, there could be absences between the likes of Richarlison and Yves Bissouma, who are being linked with exits.
Inter chief on Romero
On the outgoings front, Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero has been linked with an exit this summer, with Real Madrid the main club linked at this stage. But there has also been talk of Inter Milan showing an interest, prompting Italian media to ask the club’s vice-president Javier Zanetti whether Romero could be a target.
He told TyC Sports: “It’s not easy because we are talking about very expensive players. The club’s sustainability is a challenge for everyone and a fundamental aspect. Romero is a complete defender. I was saying before the interview that Argentina can rely on a defender who knows how to play, who marks well, is focused and is a leader. I really like him a lot. He’s one of those old-school, complete defenders. He has proved to be a key player for Argentina.”
Romero has been a key performer for Tottenham during his time at the club, but he has struggled with injury this season, like many of his teammates.
The defender has previously criticised the club owners over a lack of investment in playing staff, suggesting he may not be happy with the club’s ambitions. Though, he did later apologise, with Postecoglou confirming: “He realises that a lot of what he said was good but some wasn't the right way of dealing with it. The same way I wouldn't criticise a player publicly. I've spoken to Cristian about it and he's apologised for it. It wasn't the right way to do it. It shows he cares. There's a way to do it and this wasn't it." Romero is under contract until 2027 as things stand.
