Anthony Slater on Wilcox’s departure, the future of DeRozan

On Thursday’s edition of The Drive Guys, The Athletic‘s Anthony Slater joined the show to discuss Vlade Divac’s connection with the Sacramento Kings, assistant GM Wes Wilcox leaving for the University of Utah, the future of DeMar DeRozan, and more.

Playing in his 16th NBA season, Slater believes the future of the six-time All-Star is highly dependent on what direction the Kings go with their front office moving forward.

Fighting to remain in the Western Conference play-in race, most assume that postseason success is highly valued by the 35-year-old. They could reach a point where the idea of moving him is entertained, but their current season is far from over.

“From what I understand, Utah really came after him hard and, from a salary perspective, brought an impressive amount and lured him, in a sense, to Salt Lake City,” Slater said. “I don’t know that it was necessarily that he was just scattering, trying to find the first path out of Sacramento.”

Slater did acknowledge that the disappointing nature of Sacramento’s 2024-25 season could definitely add intrigue to other opportunities, as both Wilcox and assistant coach Luke Loucks departed mid-season.

Reportedly accepting a deal with the University of Utah to become their next men’s basketball general manager, Wes Wilcox had a goodbye message to the Sacramento Kings franchise and fanbase.

Hired under Monte McNair three years ago, Wilcox functioned as assistant general manager during that time, which included the original Beam Team that broke the 16-season postseason drought in California’s capital.
