Tottenham Hotspur keeper Guglielmo Vicario has been a key figure at N17
Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt with several injuries this season. First-team players like Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven have all suffered long-term injuries this campaign. That is one of the reasons why the Lilywhites are in the bottom half of the Premier League and hovering just above the relegation zone.
Ange Postecoglou has had to play his backup players and rely on them to get results for most parts of the campaign. It has been a dismal season and fans have not reacted well to the lack of squad dept. Spurs have had to rely on youngsters to bail them out, and Ange has given first-team debuts to several different academy players this season.
Injuries have disrupted Tottenham's season
But the injury to first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario has impacted the results much more than expected. The Italy international has been impressive ever since signing for the club in 2023, and made the goalkeeping spot his own in no time. However, his absence this season was quite visible and Spurs were leaking goals at the back.
Tottenham Hotspur keeper talks about his injury
Tottenham Hotspur were enjoying a memorable 0-4 win over Manchester City away from home in the Premier League. The North London club were on a high and fans were jubilant after a famous win against the reigning champions. However, bad news was waiting for Ange Postecoglou. His keeper Vicario had fractured his ankle during the game and still continued playing for more than 60 minutes.
Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur’s official website, Guglielmo Vicario said,
“It was another challenge of life, of course also in my football career, but more about life. I was not used to this kind of thing, from a settled routine – with training, gym, recovery and playing games when you’re happy – to then when I couldn’t walk and do normal things. It was very challenging.”
Vicario has opened up about his injury
The Italy international added,
“It was my first big injury in my career. At the beginning you don’t know how to deal with it, the emotions, if you’re feeling down, you’re not used to it. I wasn’t used to being injured so it was a big one. The medical staff did an unbelievable job to help me and I’m really happy to be back.”
Guglielmo Vicario’s impact at Tottenham Hotspur
Guglielmo Vicario has been absolutely brilliant for Tottenham ever since he has joined the club from Empoli. The 28-year-old has been one of the key players for Ange Postecoglou and has also established himself as a leader in the dressing room.
As per Sofascore, the Italy international has featured in 62 games for Spurs and kept 13 clean sheets. However, the keeper has managed to make some crucial saves throughout his time in N17 and has racked up an average rating of 7.32.
