Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes are just three of Newcastle’s top stars who’ve been linked with a move away from Tyneside this summer, with interest in Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon also reported on.
But in some bad news for a number of the Premier League and Europe’s elite clubs, it looks like the Magpies are sticking firmly to their guns and are intent on keeping the cream of the crop at the club.
And it’s a stance that has more than just the backing of the fans…
From tabloids to the national press to even the top journalists in the industry like Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, a number of Newcastle’s key players have been linked with a move away, even so soon after the 2025 Carabao Cup final win and European football was guaranteed for next season.
But it’s the sources close to the club who have reaffirmed that the current rumour mill is exactly that: just rumours.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards commented on the matter and shut down any talk that the club would be tempted to sell their talent if a ‘bigger club’ came knocking.
In a post on X last night following rumoured interest in six of our star men, the North East reporter issued this reassuring message:
‘As I said last week, you are going go to hear and read lots of stuff about Newcastle players being wanted by this club and that club over the next few months. It will be relentless and much of it will be rubbish.
‘The rest of it will be designed to unsettle and destabilise certain individuals in the hope they push for a move. It’s a game within a game. But Newcastle’s position is clear and strong. They don’t have to sell and they don’t want to sell their best players. They intend to add to them.
‘So unless the clubs being linked with Isak, Hall, Livramento, Gordon, Tonali and Bruno want to spend ridiculous money they are going to be frustrated. Not that it will stop the noise I’m afraid. May as well gets used to it. Window shuts on September 1st!’
This comes after Liverpool have been linked with Alexander Isak, Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon in recent months, while Man City’s interest in Bruno Guimaraes and Tino Livramento has been reported on. For Sandro Tonali, the Italian media persistently suggest he’s being eyed up for a return to Serie A.
It’s not just the fans and local media who are expressing frustration over the constant links and rumours.
In an interview released earlier this month, club CEO Darren Eales expressed his frustration surrounding the big clubs and media attempting to unsettle the squad, particularly in the recent run up to the final against Liverpool.
“It is part and parcel of the world we live in, but it is frustrating, it is part of what football is, everybody wants to have a story [transfer speculation] and talk about it.”
“But when you think about the growth of Newcastle, we have the ambition to be a top club. There is a sense of annoyance as we are almost seen as the next category down and it is fair game to talk about our players.”
It’s often the case in modern football that such a disconnect exists between a club’s owners and their fans, which can lead to those running the club to sell top stars for profit rather than attempting to compete at the highest level.
With that in mind, it makes it all the more reassuring that the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has strongly urged Newcastle to keep ahold of Alexander Isak in particular at all costs.
In a recent piece for The Mail, Craig Hope insisted that Yasir Al-Rumayyan to keep Alexander Isak at all costs, showing his commitment to keeping the best striker in the Premier League on Tyneside to help us compete with the very best.
With the club currently having no reason to sell, and (technically) the wealthiest owners in football keen to see the club develop, it’s looking like it’ll be a long summer for any rival fans envisioning players like Isak joining their club come the start of the 2025/26 season.
