Everton have been linked with a summer swoop for Sunderland’s rising star Chris Rigg.

Having been embroiled in a relegation battle season after season, Everton will need to recruit smartly this summer to steer away from that.

Under TFG and ahead of their move to Bramley-Moore Dock, Everton have a lot to look forward to, but success will be limited if they don’t get their recruitment right.

Rigg has been linked with a move to Merseyside this week, in a deal that would certainly showcase some smart business, though he won’t come cheap.

Sunderland benchmark set for Rigg sale

Rigg would be a great signing for Everton if they could pull off a deal, though with several top Euroepan clibs courting him, they will need to provide an offer that is impossible to turn down in order to prize him away, and according to Michael Graham, the offers will have to start at £20million.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the Sunderland journalist said: “It’s impossible to predict really. I’d like to think that Archie Gray’s £40m move to Tottenham has provided the benchmark for Rigg, but who knows in reality?

Rigg has impressed for the majority of the campaign for Sunderland.

“I think you’d be looking at £20m minimum with a sizeable sell-on clause, but I don’t think many Sunderland fans would be happy with that deal. The Wearsiders are at a point in their development where they need to maximise money to invest in the here and now, not a possibility of a future windfall.

*“Ultimately, the market demand will determine Rigg’s value, and should Sunderland decide to cash in, there will be a lengthy line of suitors, so I would expect to see that drive up the price considerably.*“

David Moyes needs to be backed with the right players

If progression is to be achieved, Everton need to back David Moyes with players that can improve the playing squad, while also having one eye on the future.

Rigg would tick every box for the Toffees, and if a deal for anything less than £30m can be achieved, it would be excellent value for money.

However, his addition would need to be followed by several others this summer to ensure that Everton can have a good start to the new season.
