Newcastle United hero Dan Burn earned rapturous applause while watching the Premier League Darts last night.

The Blyth-born defender was robbed of the chance to celebrate in style after cementing his name into the Toon history books. Burn lived every Geordie’s dream by scoring a bullet header in the Carabao Cup final final - sending the Magpies on their way to a famous victory over Liverpool.

However, a maiden England call-up meant the 6ft 7in defender had to curb the post-match festivities. Boxpark on Wembley Way was lively once Newcastle won the cup, with Eddie Howe, his players, coaching staff and boardroom figures enjoying a celebratory drink.

But the Wembley hero himself needed to be awake and fresh as a daisy at the crack of the dawn. Burn said after the game: "I'll be first there tomorrow (at England training) at 8 o'clock," he said after the game. I've had worse weeks.

“I don't want to go to sleep because I feel like I'm dreaming and it's all going to be a lie. I don't get many so I saved it for a big occasion. I feel strange, I feel numb at the minute."

He had to wait patiently but finally got the chance to live it up when the darts came to Newcastle on Thursday. Bedlington star Chris Dobey - who walked out to Local Hero - was facing off against world No.1 Luke Humphries when the camera panned to special guests sitting in VIP.

Burn was snapped alongside Toon teammates Harvey Barnes and Kieran Trippier. With no game until next Wednesday when Brentford travel to St James’ Park, the darts served as the perfect tune-up to this weekend’s Carabao Cup celebrations.

Newcastle are set to be given a hero's welcome by the region when they parade the trophy around the city centre. The star of the show will undoubtedly be Burn, now immortalised as a legend at St James’ Park.

The centre-back was seen by TV cameras plugging his new Instagram account - launched following the Wembley heroics. Burn, Barnes and Trippier - who all were met with raucous cheers by the Geordie crowd - will be preparing to go again on Saturday at the trophy parade.

Eddie Howe eulogised Newcastle United's hero at Wembley

Howe paid tribute to one of his first Newcastle signings after they both became Toon icons at Wembley. He said post-match: “(It was an) incredible moment for Dan and there's no one more deserving in my opinion.

"Starting to work with Dan when we did, he is such an inspiring guy, but also a very talented player. It's a great story really, one of the great football stories, one of the great comebacks, one of the guys who had to do it the hard way."
