Australia to hold general elections on May 3

**ISTANBUL**

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday announced that general elections will be held on May 3, 2025, following a meeting with Governor-General Samantha Joy Mostyn.

“She accepted my advice that an election be held on Saturday, 3rd of May, 2025,” said Albanese, who leads the ruling Labor Party.

The announcement comes shortly after the government introduced a tax reduction plan set to begin next year as part of a broader cost-of-living relief initiative.

In response, the opposition Liberal-National Coalition vowed to repeal the tax cuts if elected, promising instead to implement a fuel excise cut to address inflation concerns.

Australia's general election was due by May 17. Voters will elect lawmakers for all 150 seats in the House of Representatives and 40 of the 76 seats in the Senate.

In the last federal election in 2022, Labor secured 77 seats, while the opposition won 58.

No Australian prime minister has won back-to-back elections in more than two decades.
