Dolphins Punter Surprised Titans Moved On

Ryan Stonehouse joined the Miami Dolphins on a one-year, $1.725 million contract earlier this month. The one-time All-Pro punter had spent the first three seasons of his career with the Tennessee Titans, however, the franchise opted not to assign him a restricted free agency tender.

He discussed the Titans' decision to move on while speaking with reporters, stating:

I was surprised. I think a lot of other people were as well. I truly didn't expect it. I'm a guy that I like to be where my feet are, been training in that building ever since I stepped foot in it three years ago. I thought it would be a little bit different, just more clarity would have been nice, but it is what it is and I'm excited for this new opportunity.

Stonehouse, who went undrafted in 2022, added that he has built his career on being overlooked and having a chip on his shoulder. He noted that he only played one year of varsity football in high school, didn't have many college scholarship offers, and was overlooked by most teams entering the league.

The punter earned second-team All-Pro honors as a rookie. He set an NFL record in both 2022 and 2023, averaging 53.1 yards per punt. Stonehouse led the league in yards per punt in each season while finishing third in that category last season.

He has punted 216 times for 11,282 yards, averaging 52.2 yards per punt. While Stonehouse tore his ACL and MCL and broke a bone in his non-kicking leg in 2023, he recovered and played in all 17 games last season.
