Giants Predicted to Add Top QB After Russell Wilson Move

The New York Giants may have a bit of a quarterback controversy brewing. After bringing in veteran Jameis Winston, they signed Russell Wilson earlier this week to a one-year contract that could pay him as much as $21 million.

Wilson, a 10-time Pro Bowler and one-time Super Bowl champion while with the Seattle Seahawks, isn't quite the force he was several years ago when he was in Seattle. But he is still a viable option who can manage a game and hold the fort down.

However, neither he nor Winston is exactly a long-term choice. The Giants have been looking for a true franchise quarterback for the last several years, and since they hold the No. 3 pick in next month's NFL draft, some still expect them to take a signal-caller.

Yahoo Sports' latest mock draft has them taking a man who has been linked to them - Shedeur Sanders from the University of Colorado Boulder.

"Even if the Giants end up signing one of the remaining free-agent quarterbacks, they could still be looking at a longer-term plan in the draft, akin to something they did over 20 years ago with drafting (technically trading for) Eli Manning and signing Kurt Warner in the same offseason," wrote Nate Tice and Charles McDonald. "Sanders has a good arm and is a tough operator from the pocket. And while I might not have him rated this highly, quarterback desperation is real and the Giants could see enough in Sanders' game to build into a solid starter."

Experts seem divided on where Sanders will go in this draft, and there are those who may feel he is more hype than substance.

But he did throw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 74% of his pass attempts last season. While he doesn't have the arm strength of a Cam Ward, he is thought to have tremendous precision, especially on passes within the 15-20 yard range.

It is reasonable to wonder if Sanders or his father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, would put up with potentially being third on New York's depth chart. But at the very least, the 23-year-old could give frustrated New York City area sports fans something tangible to generate some hope from.
